Get Your Dot Plotted with this Political Compass Test

Political Philosphy, Random Bloggy Stuff

This test is pretty interesting.  (Thanks goes out to Dr. Michael Clifford for pointing me to it.)

I’ve taken the Pew Research Center political spectrum test and others in the past, but this one is a little different.  This not only shows you where you are on the Left/Right axis but also charts you on the spectrum between Authoritarian/Libertarian.  (You’ll see what I mean after you take the test and have your “dot” plotted.)

You can also see where other famous and notorious persons fall on the chart, which is interesting in and of itself.  (For example, I would have thought I was sort of a Maggie Thatcher type, but it turns out I am way more libertarian than she.  I am at exactly the midpoint between the two extremes; she was more to the authoritarian side.)

I’d love to hear where everyone ends up (especially those of you I know either personally or via the blogosphere).  Takes 5 to 10 minutes to answer the questions and the results are instant.

UPDATE:  Getting lots of feedback that people are dissatisfied with the quality and/or clarity of the questions in the test.  The Venerable Mr. Crum says he came out a “centrist” on both the “x” and “y” axis – but rightly points out that on the issues he is often more to the right than me (who came out 6 squares right of center).

It’s no surprise that I was in the Libertarian Right quadrant. I had about an identical placement to Milton Friedman at 9+ to the right and -3.5+ down. I would have preferred my name to be next to Hayek or Rothbard in lieu of Friedman however.

I didn’t particularly like the questions in this test as some were unclear and I didn’t know how to answer them. In some cases I agreed with part of the question and not the other part and consequently thought that the array of answer choices was inappropriate.

Here is a test that I prefer much more; The Libertarian Purity Test:

My score is 144. I’ll be impressed if anyone answering honestly can beat it.

I got a 4.5 and a -1.33. I should have strongly agreed and strongly disagreed more. Now I’m trapped in the mushy middle. I demand a recount!

http://www.theadvocates.org/quizp/index.html

This is a very short quiz with very generic open ended questions which tests your basic ideas of the concepts: more or less control over X action.

There are of course nuances to every subject, but you can’t make a short quiz to cover the millions of potential answers.

I should also note that the Political Compass gets 1 thing seriously wrong. General Pinochet was not a hard core free market advocate.

He was a socialist central planner but that didn’t work. Free market oriented reforms and strict monetary policy were put in place several years after he had wrestled control and killed several thousand of his own people – and it was only done because the economy continued to worsen under his leadership.

POLITICS: Ephemeral links by common ancestry!…

The CRIB’s periodically fugacious concerning all things political … You have to admit Obama’s campaign logo was and is effective ……

I participated knowing I am far more to the left than you. I was surprised to see the results! Economic Left/Right -6.12 and Social Libertarian/Authoritarian -2.05. This plots me in about the same spot as Nelson Mandela! I still like to read your blog . . .
